Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on 4th April, 1972. Her mother was her grandmother and grew up being an all-single child. Scott went to the Philadelphia High School for Girls when she was a senior, and then she was accepted into Temple University. In between two job opportunities as a teacher, she was studying secondary education. The hope was to become a English High School teacher. It was impossible to realize her dream, however, when after three years of studying while working as a teacher assistant, she quit college. After starting her career performing at live poetry performances and eventually, she teamed up with Amir Quest Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me was co-written by the two. The singer was at a Roots performance. Her subsequent collaborations included Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She was also able to learn about the arts of performing during the Canada-wide tour of Broadway's musical Rent. She was the very first artist to sign by Hidden Beach Recordings.
